schoolLocated in southwestern Vermont, the West Rutland School enrolls about 400 students from West Rutland and a few surrounding towns. The school serves all students in grades K-12 and also houses an early essential education (EEE) classroom in the building. WRS is a member of the Rutland Central Supervisory, which serves the administrative needs of Proctor High School, Proctor Elementary School and Rutland Town in addition to West Rutland.

WRS offers a complete academic program, including several alternative programs, and WRS students attend the Stafford Technical Center which is about 6 miles away in Rutland City. The school has a strong music program with ample opportunities for students to perform in a number of venues during the school year. Among the most popular music performances each year are the annual Halloween parade in Rutland and twice yearly Coffee Houses which feature students performing popular music, jazz, and rock tunes. WRS students are frequent participants in district and state music groups.

The school fields varsity athletic teams which compete in the Vermont Principals' Association Division IV. During the 2004-2005 school year, WRS teams competed for four state championships, winning the first ever soccer championship for a WRS team. During the 2005-2006 school years, the varsity basketball teams competed in both state championship games, and the girls won.

A number of clubs are offered for students. The list includes a fencing club, drama club, role-playing game club, and art club.

As a community dedicated to improving the opportunities for young people, the school has implemented a number of initiatives in recent years, and the community continues to consider how it can best serve the community's young people. Among the recent initiatives are:

- Participation in AVID, a middle school program to prepare students for Advanced Placement courses
- Integration of distance learning courses into the curriculum
- Continued progress in making flexible technology available to all students
- An art integration program
- Full-day kindergarten
- Participation in High Schools on the Move
